McCain funds Khalidi, Palin calls Khalidi a terrorist

In regards to Khalidi, however, the guilt-by-association game burns John McCain as well.

During the 1990s, while he served as chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), McCain distributed several grants to the Palestinian research center co-founded by Khalidi, including one worth half a million dollars.

A 1998 tax filing for the McCain-led group shows a $448,873 grant to Khalidi’s Center for Palestine Research and Studies for work in the West Bank. (See grant number 5180, "West Bank: CPRS" on page 14 of this PDF.)

The relationship extends back as far as 1993, when John McCain joined IRI as chairman in January. Foreign Affairs noted in September of that year that IRI had helped fund several extensive studies in Palestine run by Khalidi’s group, including over 30 public opinion polls and a study of "sociopolitical attitudes."

Of course, there’s seemingly nothing objectionable with McCain’s organization helping a Palestinian group conduct research in the West Bank or Gaza. But it does suggest that McCain could have some of his own explaining to do as he tries to make hay out of Khalidi’s ties to Obama.

History shows Democratic sweep would be better for stocks

NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. investors are worried about a combination of a Barack Obama administration and a Democrat-controlled Congress, but history shows that of the two likely election outcomes, that scenario is better for stocks.

Their tax rates may go up after a Democratic sweep, but experience shows their stock portfolios could give them more of a cushion than under the alternative: Republican John McCain in the White House with Democrats running Capitol Hill.

Carl Birkelbach, head of Birkelbach Management in Chicago, said Obama’s proposal of a permanent tax cut for most Americans should "help the whole, the water should rise.

"What McCain said that bothered me," Birkelbach added, "was that he said he could put a freeze on spending. We have to spend to dodge the bullet of a depression.

"An Obama win would be better for stock markets. Our international prestige will start to gain again and what that will mean is a higher dollar, and that money will flow into the U.S," Birkelbach said.

Fred Dickson, market strategist at D.A. Davidson & Co in Lake Oswego, Oregon, believes the equity market has already priced in a change in political party leadership at the top and that the worst-case scenario for an already jumpy market could be no decision on election night.

"If it comes down to a few hundred votes, and it’s not decided for days, that would really add to market volatility," Dickson said.

WASHINGTON – Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens was convicted of seven corruption charges Monday in a trial that tainted the 40-year Senate career of Alaska’s political patriarch.

The verdict, coming just days before Election Day, adds further uncertainty to a closely watched Senate race. Democrats hope to seize the once reliably Republican seat as part of their bid for a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.

Stevens, 84, was convicted of all seven charges he faced of lying about free home renovations and other gifts he received from a wealthy oil contractor. Jurors began deliberating Wednesday at noon.

Stevens faces up to five years in prison on each count when he is sentenced Jan. 26, but under federal sentencing guidelines, he is likely to receive much less prison time, if any.

The monthlong trial revealed that employees for oil services company VECO Corp. transformed the senator’s modest mountain cabin into a modern, two-story home with wraparound porches, a sauna and a wine cellar. Stevens never paid for VECO’s work.

The Senate’s longest-serving Republican, Stevens said he had no idea he was getting freebies. He said he paid $160,000 for the project and said he believed that covered everything.

Stevens asked for an unusually speedy trial, hoping he’d be exonerated in time to return to Alaska and win re-election. He kept his campaign going and gave no indication that he had a contingency plan in case of conviction.

Despite being a convicted felon, he is not required to drop out of the race or resign from the Senate. If he wins re-election, he can continue to hold his seat because there is no rule barring felons from serving in Congress. The Senate could vote to expel Stevens on a two-thirds vote.

"Put this down: That will never happen — ever, OK?" Stevens said in the weeks leading up to his trial. "I am not stepping down. I’m going to run through and I’m going to win this election.

Democrats, who are hoping to capture a filibuster-proof Senate majority, have jumped at the chance to seize the once reliably Republican seat. They have invested heavily in the race, running television advertisements starring fictional FBI agents and featuring excerpts from wiretaps.

Stevens’ conviction hinged on the testimony of Bill Allen, the senator’s longtime drinking and fishing buddy. Allen, the founder of VECO, testified that he never billed his friend for the work on the house and that Stevens knew he was getting a deal.

Stevens spent three days on the witness stand, vehemently denying that allegation. He said his wife, Catherine, paid every bill they received.

Living in Washington, thousands of miles away, made it impossible to monitor the project every day. Stevens relied on Allen to oversee the renovations, he said, and his friend deceived him by not forwarding all the bills.

Stevens is a legendary figure in Alaska, where he has wielded political influence since before statehood. His knack for steering billions of dollars in federal money to his home state has drawn praise from his constituents and consternation from budget hawks.

John "Slew" McCain, veterans flock to his campaign appearances and book signings. They trade stories about his heroic forebears and share anecdotes.

The family’s storied military history stretches back to Carroll County, Miss., where McCain’s great-great grandfather William Alexander McCain owned a plantation, and later died during the Civil War as a soldier for the Mississippi cavalry.

But what McCain didn’t know about his family until Tuesday was that William Alexander McCain had owned 52 slaves. The senator seemed surprised after Salon reporters showed him documents gathered from Carroll County Courthouse, the Carrollton Merrill Museum, the Mississippi State Archives and the Greenwood, Miss., Public Library.

"I didn’t know that," McCain said in measured tones wearing a stoic expression during a midday interview, as he looked at the documents before Tuesday night’s debate. "I knew they had sharecroppers. I did not know that."

This documentation includes slave schedules from Sept. 8, 1860, which list as the slave owner, "W.A. McCain." The schedules list the McCain family’s slaves in the customary manner of the day — including their age, gender and "color," labelling each either "black" or "mulatto." The slaves ranged in age from 6 months to 60 years.

"I knew we fought in the Civil War," McCain went on. "But no, I had no idea. I guess thinking about it, I guess when you really think about it logically, it shouldn’t be a surprise. They had a plantation and they fought in the Civil War so I guess that it makes sense."

"It’s very impactful," he said of learning the news. "When you think about it, they owned a plantation, why didn’t I think about that before? Obviously, I’m going to have to do a little more research."

Then he began to piece together information out loud. "So maybe their sharecroppers that were on the plantation were descendants of those slaves," he said.

Tracing the genealogies of slaves is often easy, because slaves frequently adopted the surnames of their owners. In 1876, for example, a Mary J. McCain married Isham Hurt. The two had a son, blues guitarist "Mississippi" John Hurt, in 1892 on Teoc, the plantation community where the McCains owned 2,000 acres.

"Is that right?" McCain asked, after considering his possible connection to the famous bluesman, who died in 1966. "That’s fascinating," he said.

McCain said his interest in his family heritage always had been focused on his military background, not his Southern roots. "I just hadn’t thought about it, to tell you the truth, because I really feel that my heritage is the military," he said.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Anchorage Daily News, Alaska’s largest newspaper, has endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for president.

The newspaper said Sunday the Democrat "brings far more promise to the office. In a time of grave economic crisis, he displays thoughtful analysis, enlists wise counsel and operates with a cool, steady hand."

The Daily News said since the economic crisis has emerged, Republican presidential candidate John McCain has "stumbled and fumbled badly" in dealing with it.

"Of the two candidates, Sen. Obama better understands the mortgage meltdown’s root causes and has the judgment and intelligence to shape a solution, as well as the leadership to rally the country behind it," the paper said.

The Daily News said Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has shown the country why she is a success as governor. But the paper said few would argue that Palin is truly ready to step into the job of being president despite her passion, charisma and strong work ethic.

"Gov. Palin’s nomination clearly alters the landscape for Alaskans as we survey this race for the presidency — but it does not overwhelm all other judgment. The election, after all is said and done, is not about Sarah Palin, and our sober view is that her running mate, Sen. John McCain, is the wrong choice for president at this critical time for our nation," the paper said.

"Like picking Sen. McCain for president, putting her one 72-year-old heartbeat from the leadership of the free world is just too risky at this time," the paper concluded.

This small biopharma company was just given the nod by FDA to submit a New Drug Application for formal approval. Successfully obtaining the necessary Phase III trial results in order to do so. They are bringing a new bug resistant antibiotic to the market. Cethromycin has been shown to treat Community aquired Pneumonia, Strep, and MRSA. Older antibiotics have quit working effectively against these bugs,MRSA is killing people left and right in our nations hospital,MRSA in case you are not aware is a bug that has developed in most the hospitals where you go in to have your tonsils removed and catch MRSA and die because very few of the current medicines are any longer effectice against these viral infections. There is a huge market for this. I listened to there Conference call this week,there were half a dozen analysts there asking many critical questions of the drugs developer Dr Flavin. FMT update: Sold off 13% of their servicing portfolio!

This deal with Carrigan should give FMT the troubled lender some breathing room. Many think this the first move to an eventual buyout.

The deal is scheduled to close on April 1st,so I am looking for it to really move off its’ lows by then. I have heard this .60 cent stock could go as high as $2.50 then. But be careful and do your own Due Diligence!

TMA was highly diluted on their bailout and cost the investors’ money. I expect it to eventually get up to $2.00 or so after they cash in some paper on the March 26,but again these are both volatile and risky,but have some potentially strong upside.

NCC is going thru some of same liquidity issues as all the above. Except they are the largest stakeholder in the New Visa IPO. BofA may not be able to pass up a buying opportunity like this. TMA will be able to clear up all the margin call issues by the 26 of March when they be able directly take advantage of the FEDs’ new 200BB cash infusion. FMT is rumored to be bought out soon by the either Kelley,Amster, or Harbinger. Three of the largest shareholders’. BSC,there is a lot of talk that the 85 yr old brokerage will be bought out by someone looking for a turn around in the future. SCA has just filed its’ plan to stave off financial ruin,and on the rate cut Tues,could double,if not triple from its’ current lows.

Speculative Plays FMT & TMA

Both of these have been thru hell and back. With the FED’s recent cash infusion,and the upcoming FED meeting on March 18th, these are both primed to do some serious bouncing. Some of you may look at the recent large gains and think that you missed the boat,but that is not the case! TMA is in the process of meeting it’s margin calls,even the one annonced today. FMT just got rid of the executive directors who were responsible for turn down of a buyout bid by Kelly Fund. There is speculation that the FMT & FIL(Fremont Investment & Loan) will be split and that the lending half will be sold off from the banking half,with a target price in the range $4.00 to 5.00 or more. Today FMT hit .90 cents(coming off the bottom of .29 cents) and AH was over .70 ,with a late sell off close of .635 cents. TMA has went from ,70 cents on Monday to a high of $3.50 today, with a close of 2.85. TMA will.as discussed on many MB’s will go back up to $6.00 to $7.00 dollars and higher, in the near term. The FDIC just gave FMT the go ahead to get rid of the previous top executives,and there is speculation that this move show’s the FDIC’s willingness to work with FMT to lift the current CDO,and allow them to start originating new loans again,at which point the stock price will climb considerably. Due your own due diligence,however,I strongly beleive that both of these stocks, to have a solid upside,in this oh so volatile market environment. These are not pump and dump scheme,these are businesses that have been major mover’s in the California Real Estate market for more than 10 to 15 years that I sold real estate there.(starting in 1983) Check them out.

I put together about 20 different watchlists in the various sectors. This make it easier to know when some unusual volume or news is happening. Plus I now try to focus on one or two particular type of businesses,eg pharma,solar,gold,sometimes tech. These varying sectors all seem to rise or fall in tandem. Among those specific sectors, there will be someone who stands out,goes against a falling market or rises quickly,this allows me to seperate the wheat from the shaft. Then do your homework,1)Why is is moving up2) is this a One day pop,or does "she" have Legs?3) I check the historical prices and try to see any patterns or trends,a lot of time when a particular stock I have been watching for few months, it will begin to repeat a pattern i recognize.4) Check the trailing quarters, Are they growing their profits over a 3 or 4 qtr period?5) On stocks I am familair with I will sometimes buy in the day before they report their previous qtr,this can be little risky if you do not have good feel for the type of business,and busnesses strong season.6) Always check the balance shet for cash and assets,and also the cash flow. 7) the charts in combinationation with historical prices can give you great insight into what may be coming up,you’ll have to study up on the chart science yourself,there’s a lot to it and I am only beginning to get a handle on it myself.8) Be Bold! 9)Making money is not your most important concern,NOT losing money IS! Set a threshold of pain, and get the Hell out if the "she" start sinking more than you are prepared to stomach.10) Find an area of the market that you are already farmiliar with through you everyday life, if you have a background in biology,you’ll probably be comfortable figuring out the ins and outs of Pharma. Work in retail,you might have a better grasp of the retail sector than me.You get the idea.11)Some of my biggest gains have come from Pharma lately. I set my Google alert for keywords that indicate a small company may have some explosive news coming up,Bio Conference,Outstanding qtr,huge share buyback, a pending FDA approval,and such. 12) There are some excellent tools ,interveiws, test running different trading strategies here on MyWallSt which have definitely sharpened my feel for what will make it,and what won’t. I could go on for awhile but hopefully the following will give you some ideas. Hot Stock "CEDU" IPO

This Chinese education stock got crushed today on it’s IPO debut(thanks to Uncle Ben and his Henchman) Opened at $10,at it’s low end of it’s pricing range,went down to $7.27. I think this will rebound with the market once everyone’s disbelief fades away. Its’ worth putting on the watchlist. They should of cut by at least a .50 on both fund rates.

Then they make some Stupid statement to boot.!!! Those Fed Guys must have been short the market.

I am getting emails and bulletins about 11/30 weekly winner now. Ramone89 was the legitimae winner Brad. That LUTHP is a convertible note. None of the other FOUR contests I play allow this trade or JCadwell’s FMNPO. People feel like they are getting ripped off when these slicksters dig up obscure notes and bonds as legitimate trades. Yes, you read that right. Lucent, the voice, data, and video communication services company, closed at $1,037.50 per share Thursday, January 18. You didn’t think this was the Lucent common stock that used to trade on the NYSE under the symbol LU, did you? Nor is it the Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) stock which is the result of the merger between French communications company Alcatel with Lucent.

Of course, I’m talking about Lucent’s preferred stock, with the official name of Lucent Technologies Capital Trust I (LUTHP.OB). This is a 7.75% Cumulative Convertible Trust Preferred Security which was first issued in 2002. During the last year, it had a low of 935.00 and a high of 1,100.00.

Brad its called mywallst ,not mybondst,or mynotest. Everytime those are allowed as legitimate trades, everyone raises hell. I beleive that is FNGP’s second profile that "won" last Friday. He had sent me a message saying I was jealous of JCardwell the weeks before,and then he goes and find something very similar and screws the legitimate player out of his win. Just let me know If you are gong to continue to allow these type trades because I have begun traking those,and a dozen similar ones. If the current practice stands,I should be able to get up to a Billion by next month.

Stop the madness, it creates bad vibes for everyone else, and I really get warn out from all the incessant whining I do here about these "trades"

Oh, and its’ still complete garbage that JCardwell stunt was allowed to keep the dollar amounts, totally unfair to everyone.

It seems that the Management is listening a little closer to the community, than we had previously thought. I may have went a bit overboard with my "Weekly Winner? Rant". The mistake was discovered,and corrected by the following morning. In addition, the Company seems to be catching up on the Prize payouts, as I have now received both of my $1,000.00 prizes. Not to mention, I am now(drum roll please)even wearing my brand new, MyWallSt Hat. I can’t wait to wear it to town tonight. Lol! This is an excellent place to try out new trading strategies, make some new friends, pick up the occasional "hot stock" tip,and even make a few extra bucks. I whine a lot, but I truly enjoy MyWallSt.net

What kind of garbage is this? The system allows him to enter a MTG Bond as a trade? It drops down to almost nothing every 3 months or so,then is funded and goes back up to $100,000.00 ,I checked it out,and it has been doing the same thing for the last FIVE years, with NO variance. Complete garbage. He must be friends with FNGP.

The poor guy in second is getting totally ripped off,if this is allowed to stand!

This is a medical office service and software that handles all the physicians paperwork. Saves them tons of money in staff and compliance issues. Not to mention Bush spoke about this in his last State of the Union. Plus this is his nephew’s business does not hurt either. LOL’ buy today or you’ll miss the train. The market popped almost 260 pts then give 130 back. It’s very dangerous to be on the crashing side of that wave. Hopefully you had an existing position the day before,and sold off at the peak this morning. If not don’t go back in til after lunch and see if the wave crests again. The FED move was big,but cut a short term rate, not the more important FED cost of funds rate. Taking up a position this afternoon should get you a nice open on Monday.

If they do increase the cash,there will be a sharp spike. Buy on limit order of course,and once you take up a posotion put in a reasonable limit sell. Those price spikes have not been holding,with most selling off in afterhours trading As to CTRN, I think there’s some upside to it,but again set a limit sell for whatever % you are looking for so you don’t give it all back. Good Trading LLNW had bad guidance but is a Tech IPO,that has been as high as 24, $9.00 as of close. It will go back up with the next strong tech sector rally right along AAPL.

Shouldn’t I be happy? 3. You should enjoy declining markets. Declining stock prices… nervous investors… predictions of impending doom. It’s during times like these that you have to keep your head. 4. SCARED MARKETS ARE THE ONLY KIND OF MARKETS THAT CAN MAKE SAVVY INVESTORS VERY RICH. 5. The creeping anxiety most investors feel in a bad market is like a humans internal “flight or fight” signal. But if you keep your emotions in check, it could make you a lot of money. Most people don’t know how to interpret the signal correctly.

I did a podcast with Casey(Cee-Walk) this morning. TodaYS’ HOTTIE’S ARE “TASR” AND “NCST” Both of these are in that sweet spot wave of great news that you can ride all the way to the bank. First TASR just began the distibution of their new personal protection device. Previously most there products have been for the police and military. This new device will give TASR exposure to general public they’d not had before. There is 26% short interest in this stock,so keep an eye on it. I expect there to be a very profitable short sqeeze this next week due the the shorters unsucessfully trying to drive it into the ground. They tried today, on a horrendus day and the best they could do was keep it at about 50cent short of it’s 52 week high. This is going to at least $20 next week. NCST just recieved FDA approval of nanocrystals, this is huge for such a small company. This technology allow silver particles,to name one, to be used in the healing process. For burns,and any open wounds. Speeding the healing of surgery and preventing infection. With today’s action,this will carryover thru next week. I am looking for this to go up to at least $8.00. With only 3% short interest and 19% held by financial institutions. CLWR has recently shook off it’s bum IPO start and signed some major deals with Verizon and the like. Expect for this to go up to $35 to $40 when the market rallies again this week or next. A solid long term position holder. BCON and BQI are on a roll, $75 dollar a barrel oil will push both these ,regardless of what the markets are doing. HOKU got crushed today,but they are rock solid,closed at $11.72 ,looking for them to Bounce back to $14 to $15 next week during any solar play rally.
