NEW YORK (CRWENewswire) -- Stocks mostly fell Tuesday as mixed reports on home prices and consumer confidence give investors little incentive to step into the market.

A decision by IBM Corp. to double its stock-repurchase plan gave a boost to the Dow Jones industrials, but the Nasdaq composite index fell after Baidu Inc., the Chinese Internet search company, warned its revenue could take a hit as it switches its advertising system. Falling stocks outpaced those that rose.

 

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (CRWENewswire) -- Bank holding company UMB Financial Corp. on Tuesday reported a 10 jump in its third-quarter profit, fueled in part by a jump in total deposits.

The company also boosted its quarterly dividend by 5.7 percent to 18.5 cents per share. Investors responded by pushing the company's stock up $2.18, or 5.6 percent, to $41.33 in afternoon trading.

For the three months ending Sept. 30, UMB said it earned $24 million or 59 cents per share. That compared to $21.8 million or 53 cents per share, in the year-ago period.

The performance beat Wall Street expectations. On average, analysts polled by Thomson Reuters forecast earnings of 49 cents per share.

NEW YORK (CRWENewswire) -- Syngenta Ventures, the venture capital unit of agribusiness company Syngenta AG, said Tuesday it is investing an undisclosed amount in privately held biotechnology company Metabolon.

Metabolomics develops technology sued to accelerate the development of plants.

Syngenta Ventures will take a seat on Metabolon's board of directors. It said the equity investment was made in the Series C financing of Metabolon which raised $12.3 million from a several investors, including Syngenta Ventures.
