On the 11th of August, history was made in the Chinese capital of Beijing. An otherwise silent India erupted in joy at a very rare moment. It was a moment which took more than 100 years in the making. A nation of more than a billion people celebrated in the streets as the country got its first individual Olympic gold medal as Chandigarh born ace shooter Abhinav Bindra created history by winning the 10 meter event. Bindra was able to hit gold and in the process demolished the myth that Indians were underperformers when it came to the big stage.

A management graduate, Bindra managed to outclass his other two competitors Qinan and Hakkinen to become the undisputed champion in this division. He took over the lead from Hakkinen in the sixth round from where he constantly maintained the lead till the last round to put India on the global map and making every Indian proud back home. He finished with an overall tally of 700.5, marginally outperforming his closest competitor.

Abhinav hails from a wealthy family but is known to be very calm and composed. He is famous for his reputation for being brash and disrespectful towards the media in nature which was completely opposite of what everyone saw as he showed no signs of emotions while he was being awarded the medal.

In a group of athletes from the Indian contingent who have so far been unsuccessful to win any laurel, Bindra has truly been a phenomenal performer.
