HEMPSTEAD, New York (CNN) -- A majority of debate watchers think Sen. Barack Obama won the third and final presidential debate, according to a national poll conducted right afterward.

Fifty-eight percent of debate watchers questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll said Democratic candidate Obama did the best job in the debate, with 31 percent saying Republican Sen. John McCain performed best.

The poll also suggests that debate watchers' favorable opinion of Obama rose slightly during the debate, from 63 percent at the start to 66 percent at the end. The poll indicates that McCain's favorables dropped slightly, from 51 percent to 49 percent.

The economy was the dominant issue of the debate, and 59 percent of debate watchers polled said Obama would do a better job handling the economy, 24 points ahead of McCain.

During the debate, McCain attacked Obama's stance on taxes, accusing Obama of seeking tax increases that would "spread the wealth around." But by 15 points, 56 percent to 41 percent, debate watchers polled said Obama would do a better job on taxes. By a 2-1 margin, 62 percent to 31 percent, debate watchers said Obama would do a better job on health care.

Sixty-six percent of debate watchers said Obama more clearly expressed his views, with 25 percent saying McCain was more clear about his views.

By 23 points, those polled said Obama was the stronger leader during the debate. By 48 points, they said Obama was more likeable. Watch entire debate: Video Part 1 » | Video Part 2 » | Video Part 3 »

McCain won in two categories. Eighty percent of debate watchers polled said McCain spent more time attacking his opponent, with seven percent saying Obama was more on the attack. Fifty-four percent said McCain seemed more like a typical politician during the debate, with 35 percent saying Obama acted more like a typical politician.

"Independents tend to prefer debates that are dominated by substance and light on discussion of personal characteristics," said Keating Holland, CNN polling director. "The perception that McCain attacked Obama gave red meat to GOP partisans, but it probably didn't help McCain with independents.""There was a notable gender gap as well," Holland said. "Women thought Obama won the debate by a 62 percent to 28 percent margin. Among men, Obama's lead was narrower, 54 percent to 35 percent in Obama's favor."

During the debate, McCain demanded to know the full extent of Obama's relationship with William Ayers, a 1960s radical. But the poll suggests that line of attack may not resonate with Americans. Fifty-one percent of debate watchers said Obama's connection to Ayers didn't matter at all to them, with 23 percent saying it mattered a great deal.

The audience for the debate poll appeared to be a bit more Democratic -- and a bit more Republican -- than the U.S. population as a whole. Forty percent of debate watchers in the survey were Democrats and 30 percent Republicans.

CNN's estimate of the number of Democrats in the voting age population as a whole indicates the sample is about 3 to 4 points more Democratic than the population as a whole, but also about 2 to 3 points more Republican than the population as a whole.

Eighty-eight percent of Democrats questioned in the poll said Obama did the best job, with 68 percent of Republicans saying McCain performed best. Among independents, 57 percent said Obama did the best job, with 31 percent backing McCain as the winner of the debate.

The candidates first debated in Oxford, Mississippi, on September 26. Fifty-one percent of debate watchers polled by CNN and the Opinion Research Corp. said Obama won that debate, with 38 percent saying McCain performed best. The second presidential debate was held in Nashville, Tennessee, on October 7 and 54 percent of debate watchers polled said Obama won, compared with 30 percent who said McCain did the best job.

The running mates, Democratic Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware and Republican Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska faced off in Saint Louis, Missouri, in the single vice presidential debate October 2. Fifty-one percent of debate watchers polled said Biden won, and 36 percent said Palin won.

The post-debate polls do not reflect the views of all Americans. They only represent the views of people who watched the debates.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll was conducted by telephone Wednesday night, with 620 adult Americans who watched the debate questioned. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Have you seen the latest Gallup poll? McCain is closing the gap. If he didn't win the debate why is he closing the gap? As far as you and the rest being one-sided you post nothing positive about McCain and just positive about Obama. You go on about the K 5 from over 20 years ago and nothing about Obama and the crooked fake voter registering Acorn who Obama worked for. etc etc etc  How about Bill A?There is noting fair and balanced in your postings. Your are intent on turning this into a one-sided left wing blog.

I think Brad may have been watching CBS, MSN, NBC,MSNBC and reading the New York Times- All horribly one-sided liberal media venues. I agree with deadeye about McCain winning last night's debate by a landslide. It was the "best" McCain we've seen and he brought his A-game. We are in a war people- I don't trust Barack Hussein Obama and his lack of experience to bring us out of this war unscathed. However, I DO trust McCain's experience and expertise. Plus- Obama has been linked to- in way or another directly or indirectly- WAAAAAAY to many Islamic Terrorists and Anti- Americans!!! I can never vote for someone as my leader and President who is 44% Arabic ( his father 87%!!) Scary!!!

FYI- McCain was never charged in the Keating 5 thing....

McCain needed a Knock-Out Punch- he didn't deliver one.  Plus, can you say Anger Management? McCain is a Hero- he has served this country his entire life and for that he has and will always have my gratitude and respect. But, the # 1 issue facing this country is the Economy, and averting the Great Depression Two.

This country demands change, new ideas and someone that has a deep understanding of economics.  McCain saying just 3 weeks ago that the fundamentals of the economy are strong... and prior to that- admitting he doesn't know much about economics-- sorry, wrong guy - wrong time.

McCaine might not be the right guy for the crisis you guys are facing down there, but he is less wrong than Obama. Socialism will not save the economy. And remember, it was ACORN pressuring the Clinton administration to get banks to relax lending rules in an attempt to make mortgages more "affimative action" that started the whole mess. And who was neck deep with ACORN? That's right, Mr. Obama.

Thank you all for taking your time to comment on my blog.

Deadeye – Yes MY blog will be “one-sided” and biased towards me. Your blog will probably be biased towards you. I probably won’t have a blog about my love affair. I didn’t know a blog was supposed to be so bipartisan.

Michelle – I just posted an article I found on CNN. When you find a news source that isn’t one sided you let me know. FYI – I don’t judge anybody based on race or sex.

Suggie – It doesn’t matter if OBama won. Joe Six pack goes to AA on Wed and Joe Plumber was watching the baseball game.

Next week I will post some excerpts from a rolling stones article about McCain that I found fascinating.

My last comment didn't post all the way...this is what it meant to say:

Michelle: "Barack Hussein Obama" " I can never vote for someone as my leader and President who is 44% Arabic ( his father 87%!!) "

immature and uncalled for...of all the reason NOT to chose a president, discriminating someone because of their race should not be one of them in my opinion.

i totally agree with Amber on this. A persons name, race, gender, religion, ethnicity, or  background should not be a basis to whether or not to vote for a president, its just pure ignorance, in my honest opinion. Sorry i had to voice this out.

To everyone- I am NOT in anyway shape or form a racist and do not judge people on thier race, religion, backround, age, or sex. My thoughts were when writing the blog yesterday was that we are in a war with terrorists and to think that potentially our future leader of the US is somehow or in someway linked to potentially dangerous people? ????????????????

Again, we are at war and I am not comfortable voting for someone who cannot cleary explain the nature of their relationship to extremely dangerous and crazy people. The bottom line is that I do not trust Obama.

Period.

EmceeCooper Says:

Michelle,

I can tell that you believe McCain won the debate simply by being the "best" that we have seen him since the campaign began. Although, just because he brought his "A Game," I don't think that necessarily qualifies him as the victor. On any given day, I could bring my "A-Game" to a street ball session with Kobe Bryant and I doubt many people would think I came out the winner.

On another point, I know how you feel about Obama's connection with Ayers and Wright. Explaining your relationship with "crazy people," as you tactfully stated, can be difficult . I know it would be difficult for me, and quite honestly terrifying, to explain to the public my relationship with you, but that's the nature of being a candidate for our nation's highest office. These campaigns invariably turn ugly as we examine each candidates deficiencies.

Ultimately, you should think about what issues affect your life and vote for the candidate whose methods and goals are most in line with your own. The petty squabbles that occur over the course of a campaign just muddle the issues and bring out superficial criticisms with little or no bearing on a candidates agenda once elected.

Vote Obama Baba Booey Baba Booey!
